Hong Kong faan

Hong Kong faan tables

Faan decide whether a Hong Kong hand is allowed to win and how much it is worth. This page lists every scoring item with its value under VMC and under HKMA, side by side, so you can see where the two rule sets agree and where they do not.

How to read the tables

  • Faan are the scoring units of a Hong Kong hand. You add the faan of every item that applies, and the total is looked up in a point table.
  • “each” means per set. “in total” means the whole value of the pattern, including bonuses that the pattern already contains, so do not add them again.
  • “no extras” means a limit hand that takes nothing more on top of its value.
  • A dash (–) means the item does not exist in that rule set.
  • The minimum to win (3 faan is usual) and the top value are separate rules: see the VMC and HKMA pages below.

All Four Flowers / Seasons2 per category–Replaces the matching tile bonus within that category.

Where the two rule sets differ most

  • Top value: VMC limit hands are worth 13 faan and the point table runs to 13 or more. HKMA caps every hand at 10 faan.
  • Flowers: VMC scores flowers and seasons and has a No Flowers item. HKMA tables in MyMahjong use 136 tiles and have no flower faan.
  • Kongs: VMC allows concealed kongs in Closed Hand and in Four Concealed Pungs. HKMA allows no kongs in Four Concealed Pungs and none in Closed Hand.
  • Last tile: VMC counts the last wall tile or the final discard. HKMA counts only the last wall tile.
  • After a kong: VMC gives 2 in total instead of Self-Drawn. HKMA gives 1 for After Kan and 1 for Self-Drawn.
  • Human Hand exists only in the VMC list.
